I was an insulin dependent diabetic for 38 years prior to receiving a pancreas transplant. The transplant changed my life from struggling with brittle (uncontrollable) diabetes to the equally challenging problems of a transplant patient requiring immune suppressors. These drugs are vital in order to avoid rejection of the transplanted organ, but they are difficult to tolerate and expose the patient to the constant risk of infection. In spite of these difficulties and occasional setbacks, I look at my “new” life without diabetes as a miracle. Based on my own medical history and experiences, I have become an educator and motivator for diabetics like me. I am very greatful for my good fortune and it is my way of giving back to the community.
